I am delighted to announce that Sally Fraser, from Boarding School Action, and I will be at Edinburgh University Debating Society debating the motion “This house would ban boarding for the under 16s” at 6.30 on Wednesday evening November 19th.
In proposing this motion, we have deliberately chosen a provocative age-defined motion to see how it sits in Scotland, which, despite the referendum outcome, is still very alive politically and has a degree of independence already in education.
Boarding for over 16s could be implemented widely, democratically and to good effect, using the existing stock of boarding schools and teachers. There is already one such model in Europe which is very effective and benign, the Danish Efterskole system.
Leading the opposition speakers will be Geoffrey Dennis, the head of the Royal National Children’s Foundation and former CEO of Care International.
